Zanzibar is ushering in a transformative era of inclusion for individuals with disabilities.

Advancing Disability Rights and Inclusion in Tanzania

Tanzania’s journey toward a more inclusive society began with its 2009 ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the enactment of the Disabilities Act in 2010. These legal frameworks mandate the establishment of a comprehensive register of persons with disabilities at all levels, from village to national.

Globally, 16% of the population, or 1.3 billion people, live with disabilities, according to the World Health Organization. In Tanzania, the 2012 census reported 9.3% of the population as having a disability, though the real figure is likely higher. To address systemic exclusion, the government is expanding access to inclusive education, including vocational training. Schools like Mazinyungu Inclusive Education Primary School now offer dormitories, enabling children with disabilities to attend primary education—an uncommon feature in public schools.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On December 2, 2023, Tanzania observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) in Dodoma under the theme, “United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with, and by persons with disabilities.”

The ‘My Rights My Choices’ programme (2021–2025), led by UNFPA and funded by Finland, works to protect and enhance the rights of women and girls, particularly those with disabilities. Operating in select districts in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the initiative tackles gender-based violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation.

By strengthening community capacities and government policies, this program ensures a holistic response to these challenges, empowering vulnerable women and girls and fostering collaboration for a more inclusive future.
